What Makes A Good 4x4 Cube?
Magnets play a huge part in determining a good 4x4 from a bad one. Granted, magnetic cubes are down to preference, however they do also have alot of benefits.
We would recommend a magnetic 4x4 ✅
It's not just 3x3 that should corner cut well. All twisty puzzles need a little tolerance when it comes to aligning the layers and trying to make your next move. Corner cutting can be aided with correct speed cube lube and correct tensioning of your 4x4 but it's always good to start with a good base model.
We would recommend 4x4's that have more rounded corners on the pieces, back in the olden days this was known as a 'Florian Mod' but now comes standard on most 4x4's. ✅
It's always good to have a balance between the corner cutting of your puzzle, and the stability/control. Corner cutting gets better the looser your cube is, however, you do sacrifice stability and control (you are also more prone to your cube popping/exploding the looser it is).
We don't recommend loosening your cube to the point it falls apart just for you to have good corner cutting, if this is happening then you could potentially be due an upgrade. ❌
UV coating is a ultra glossy lacquer applied to the outside of your cube which helps with grip. Most people love it but there are a few that still prefer non UV coated cubes.It's best to try one at a speed cubing competition before commiting, just to be on the safe side.
We recommend UV Coating but it's a little hard to come by on 4x4's as of early 2024 ✅
Our Recommendations
Starting with probably one of the best selling 4x4's in every single cube store in the world, the MGC 4x4.
The MGC is smooth, controllable, stable, fast and can be used by almost everybody irregardless of your turning style.
As of nearly 2024 there are 3 unique versions of the MGC 4x4, we will only recommend the original here but you can also grab the UV coated version or the Micro Actuator version.
Moving on to the MoYu AoSu WR M. Now, if you started cubing in the early teens (2013/2014 onwards) then you'll of course know about the AoSu. MoYu released the original AoSu 4x4 back before KewbzUK was even a thought, and believe us, it's still going very strong. The AoSu WR M is extremely stable and perfect with the correct setup.
Honourable Mention
We have an honourable mention here, the YJ ZhiLong Mini is a 56mm 4x4 Speed Cube that always sells out at competitions that we attend. If you have smaller hands, or just prefer smaller cubes, this 4x4 is literally perfect!
Out of the box it can feel a little sandy but with a little drop of a quality lubricant like KewbzUK Swift or Dash.
Then moving on to the brand new (for 2024) VinCube 4M UV. It has a very MGC feel to it, however, out of the box it is very fast and will need to be tightened to ensure that it's stable enough to not pop/explode during a solve. Also available with a custom fitted ball-core kit.
If you're on a budget or don't want to buy an expensive UV 4x4 incase you don't get on with it then look no further than the DianSheng 4M UV. Whilst it is a budget cube, it's performance isn't too far off of similarly priced non-UV 4x4's. A little tight and requires lube to really get it going, it's a great introduction to UV coated 4x4s.
